In week two of March we highlighted the Top Tips, on how to develop a comprehensive Global Supply Chain Security Program by incorporating multiple layers of security. As an extension to that blog, today we will highlight easy to deploy medium and high security cargo theft prevention solutions, specifically attuned to the trucking industry.
Recent Trends
Each year we see an upsurge in cargo theft with trucking being the most targeted mode of transportation. The threat of cargo theft and pilferage is one that affects every industry, but some are at higher risk than others. In 2020, truck stops, drop lots, and unsecured parking were again the top reported locations where theft occurred.
Top Targeted Industries
- Food and Beverage
- Consumer Electronics
- Pharmaceuticals
- Building Materials and Metals
- Household Goods
More recent trends also identify mixed load cargo is frequently at the top of the list because it can be broken down and separated so the “bad actors” in question can move quickly to sell off items at local vendors. In North America Trailer theft rose 49% from 2019 in 2020 and tractor theft also spiked 18%. By November 2020 613 cargo theft reports had been filed.
It is easy to think that cargo theft only affects the company whose cargo is stolen. This is not true, however, as its now become more than just about the cargo loss and revenue. Thieves have now become interested in taking the trailers as well.
The thieves simply take the trailer and “re-vin” it or rather switch the identity of the trailer in order to resell it. This results in a double loss to the carrier as not only is the cargo lost, but their vital equipment once its dismantled is lost and is virtually impossible to recover.
The leading cargo theft prevention and deterrence gurus such as CargoNet advise fleets to have GPS installed not only on their power units, but also embedded within the cargo. Highlighted in our solutions we share how we are helping our customers take actions to ensure tangible layered security measures are implemented to mitigate their losses.
