How to Safely Secure your Chemical Shipments

Many TydenBrooks customers need to safely transport chemicals, so it’s vital to be aware of the international directives and regulations that must be followed. This includes the hazards of chemical transportation, how to avoid them, and the best practices for moving chemicals both on and off-site. The transport of hazardous substances brings significant financial, environmental, and health-related risks, so it’s also imperative that a robust legislative infrastructure is in place to reduce the risk of accidents, but it’s also imperative to secure the apertures and hinges while such substances are being transported.

As such, security, loss prevention, and logistics leaders need to be knowledgeable of the correct security seal application procedures associated with chemical transportation. Today we will share some best practices for chemical transport that can reduce the risk of incidents, contamination, or pilferage. Firstly, a high security ISO 17712 compliant barrier cable or bolt seal should be used to ensure maximize security and visual tamper evidence. In conjunction with those measures a medium duty barrier seal or an indicative plastic security seal for returning empty shipments needs to be applied. Select your security seals based on point of destination, value, susceptibility to theft, pilferage, and risk of contamination.

In order to maintain control over your security sealing program and procedures, all seals must be properly applied, checked, and recorded by a security or loss prevention representative. Also ensure heavy duty cable or bolt cutters are available to remove the high security barrier seals at the destination point.

DRY VAN TRUCK PROCEDURE

A. Seal the side as well as the rear door hasps for dry van trucks, ensure the security seals are properly locked by pulling on the lock body of the ISO bolt and properly cinch the ISO cable so you have no more than 0.5” finger loop to prevent ratcheting.

B. For return shipments utilize a fixed or adjustable cinch plastic security seal to ensure no contraband or contaminating elements are introduced into the truck before reloading.

C. When securing chemical drums utilize a light duty cable seal or adjustable cinch plastic seal along with VOID security labels on drum caps where required.

D. Review and confirm that all names, security seal identification numbers, and dates listed on the chain-of-custody documents are accurate.

E. Only limit access to the security seals and documentation to approved company associates.

TANKER TRUCK & TANKER CAR PROCEDURE

A. For securing tanker trucks and tanker cars be sure all lids and valves are properly secured with ISO cable seals and adjusted to no more than 0.5” finger loop to prevent ratcheting.

B. For return shipments utilize a medium duty cable seal or adjustable cinch plastic security seal to ensure no contaminating elements are introduced into the tanker before refilling.

C. Review and confirm that all names, security seal identification numbers, and dates listed on the chain-of-custody documents are accurate.

D. Only limit access to the security seals and documentation to approved company associates.

To recap, the transportation of hazardous goods poses significant threats to people and the environment in the form of explosions, fires, toxic leaks, radioactive spills, and the inhalation of corrosive substances. Such threats make safe and secure chemical transportation an issue of paramount importance, regardless of whether the chemicals are being transported between facilities, states, or between countries. Incorporating a robust security sealing program for both for on-site and external chemical transport can dramatically reduce the risk of chemicals incidents and contamination.
